    The Hägglunds MB is a radial piston, low-speed, high-torque hydraulic motor engineered for direct-drive applications requiring very large displacement and extreme torque density.

    Unlike a conventional hydraulic motor that spins fast and needs a reduction gearbox to deliver usable torque, the MB couples directly to the load. There's no gear reducer, no coupling stack, and no associated backlash, alignment tolerance, or maintenance burden. The motor itself becomes the final drive element.

    How the MB Motor Works

    At its core, the MB is a straightforward application of Pascal's principle at industrial scale: hydraulic fluid under pressure acts on piston faces, and the resulting force is converted into rotary torque through a cam profile.

    The Radial Piston Mechanism

    Inside the motor housing, a ring of hydraulic pistons is arranged radially around a central shaft. Pressurized oil is distributed sequentially to each piston through a rotating valve system (commonly a spool or disc valve arrangement). As oil pressure pushes each piston outward against the lobed cam ring, the reaction force is translated into rotation of the housing or shaft, depending on configuration.

    Because torque output is a direct function of displacement and system pressure — rather than motor speed — the MB can generate enormous starting torque from a dead stop, even under full load. This is a critical distinction from electric motors, which typically require inrush current management and soft-start systems to handle high breakaway torque.

    Displacement, Torque, and Speed Relationship

    Displacement in an MB motor is defined by the volume of oil required to complete one full shaft revolution. Because these motors are modular, the same basic frame can be built with multiple piston rings to scale displacement — and therefore torque — without changing the motor's footprint dramatically. Speed, by contrast, is a function of oil flow rate: more flow means faster rotation, independent of the pressure driving the torque.

    This decoupling of torque and speed is the defining engineering advantage of the platform. An MB motor can deliver full rated torque at near-zero RPM, hold a load stationary under pressure without drift, and accelerate smoothly under closed-loop control — all without a transmission.

    Typical Applications of the Hägglunds MB Motor

    The MB's combination of massive torque and direct-drive simplicity makes it a natural fit anywhere a slow, powerful, controllable rotation is required.

    Marine and Offshore

    Winches and windlasses — anchor handling, mooring, and towing winches on offshore support vessels and drill ships use direct-drive hydraulic motors to deliver high line pull at low, controllable speeds.

    Thrusters and propulsion auxiliaries — some azimuth thruster and propulsion-support systems rely on hydraulic direct drive for compactness in constrained hull spaces.

    Mining and Mineral Processing

    Ball mills and SAG mills — grinding mills benefit from direct-drive torque that can handle the massive, uneven starting loads of a fully charged mill without a girth gear and pinion arrangement.

    Conveyor drives — long overland or underground conveyors use hydraulic direct drive for smooth starts, load sharing across multiple drive points, and controlled braking on decline sections.
