    The A10VO is a swashplate-design, variable-displacement axial piston pump built by Bosch Rexroth for open hydraulic circuits. It's designed for hydrostatic transmissions, where flow is proportional to drive speed and displacement, and adjusting the swashplate angle allows flow to be varied smoothly. In plain terms: instead of pushing a fixed amount of oil per revolution, like a gear pump, the A10VO adjusts how much oil it delivers on the fly based on the angle of an internal swashplate. That's what lets a single pump match output to load demand instead of wasting energy (and generating heat) by dumping excess flow over a relief valve.

    The "100" in A10VO100 refers to the displacement size. Within the A10VO family, displacement sizes span 28, 45, 71, 100, and 140 cm³/rev (1.71 to 8.54 in³/rev), so the 100-size sits toward the larger end — suited for machines that need more flow at a given speed than the smaller 28, 45, or 71 frames can deliver.

    How the A10VO100 Works

    Inside the housing, a cylinder barrel holds a set of pistons arranged parallel to the drive shaft — hence "axial piston." As the shaft rotates, the pistons ride against the angled swashplate, which forces them in and out of their bores. That reciprocating motion draws hydraulic fluid in on one stroke and pushes it out under pressure on the next.

    The genius of the variable-displacement design is that the swashplate angle isn't fixed. A control mechanism — hydraulic, mechanical, or electro-hydraulic depending on the variant ordered — tilts the swashplate to increase or decrease piston stroke length in real time. Steeper angle, longer stroke, more flow per revolution. Flatten the angle toward zero, and flow drops toward nothing even while the shaft keeps turning.

Skipping this is a surprisingly common field mistake that ends in a blown cover and a fluid spray under pressure.
