Rexroth A10VO60 series 52 and 53 swashplate axial piston hydraulic pump

The A10VO60 is a variable-displacement, swashplate-design axial piston pump built for open-circuit hydrostatic drives. In plain terms: it's a pump where a set of pistons arranged around a rotating cylinder block are driven by a tilting swashplate, and the angle of that swashplate — not the pump's speed — determines how much oil it pushes out per revolution.

Series 52 and 53 are consecutive design generations of the same NG60 frame size (NG stands for "Nenngröße," or nominal size, referring to the geometric displacement class). The pump operates at a nominal pressure of 250 bar (3,600 psi) and a maximum pressure of 315 bar (4,550 psi), which puts it solidly in the mobile and industrial mid-to-high-pressure category.

How the A10VO60 Works

The Swashplate Principle

Inside the housing, a cylinder block containing several pistons rotates against a tiltable swashplate. As the block turns, each piston is forced in and out of its bore by the swashplate's angle, drawing oil in on one stroke and expelling it under pressure on the other. Tilt the swashplate more, and each piston travels farther — more displacement, more flow. Tilt it toward zero, and displacement collapses toward nothing, even with the shaft still spinning at full speed.

This is the core advantage over a fixed-displacement gear or vane pump: the A10VO60 only delivers the flow the system actually demands, which is why it shows up so often on machines where energy efficiency and heat management matter — excavators, cranes, injection molding presses, and marine deck equipment.

Control Options

The A10VO60 Series 52/53 is available with several control heads, each suited to a different application logic:

DR (Pressure control) — holds outlet pressure at a set value by de-stroking the pump as system pressure rises. Common on constant-pressure hydraulic supply systems.

DFR / DFR1 (Pressure and flow control) — combines pressure limiting with load-sensing-style flow matching.

DRG (Pressure control with remote adjustment) — allows pressure setpoint changes without mechanical access to the pump.

EP / EK (Electro-proportional control) — displacement is commanded electronically via solenoid current, letting a machine's ECU directly manage flow. This is the control type most commonly specified on newer, electronically managed equipment.

LA (Pressure, flow, and power/torque control) — the most sophisticated option, holding constant input torque across varying pressure conditions so the prime mover (engine or electric motor) isn't overloaded.

Rotation and Shaft Configuration

The pump is offered in clockwise and counterclockwise rotation, with shaft options including splined (SAE), straight keyed, and tapered designs (tapered shafts are typically limited to Series 52). Getting rotation direction wrong is one of the most common ordering mistakes — running the pump backward from its rated direction can cause cavitation and rapid internal wear, since the porting is asymmetric by design.

Installation and Maintenance Notes

A few points that consistently trip up field technicians:

Case drain is mandatory. The pump housing must always run at a pressure above ambient, with a dedicated case drain line back to the reservoir — never plug this port.

Inlet (suction) conditions matter more than people expect. Insufficient inlet pressure at high input speeds is a leading cause of cavitation damage; check the minimum required inlet pressure against the data sheet for your specific speed and displacement combination.

Fluid cleanliness and viscosity should match Rexroth's fluid rating list (data sheet 90245) — axial piston pumps are far less tolerant of contamination than gear pumps, because piston-to-bore clearances are tight.

Line length on remote-sensing controls (X, LS lines) is limited — excessively long lines introduce lag and instability in pressure/flow control response.

Tandem/combination pumps (two pumps joined via a through-drive) are rated for a maximum mass acceleration force and may need a support bracket depending on configuration — don't assume a through-drive mount is self-supporting.

Selection Table

Q1: How do I know which control type (DR, DFR, EP, LA) I need?

A1: It depends on what the pump needs to hold constant. Pressure control (DR) for a fixed pressure target, flow control (DFR) when downstream demand varies, electro-proportional (EP/EK) when a controller needs direct electronic command, and power/torque control (LA) when protecting a prime mover from overload is the priority.

Q2: Where do I find the exact displacement and torque figures for my specific pump?

A2: On the pump's nameplate type code, cross-referenced against Bosch Rexroth's current data sheet (RE/RA 92703 for A10VO Series 52/53). Figures vary by control variant, so don't rely on generic "A10VO60" specs alone.
