    The A15VO is an axial piston variable displacement pump built by Bosch Rexroth for open-circuit hydrostatic drive systems, primarily in mobile and off-highway equipment. It belongs to the same swashplate-design family as the A15VSO/A15VLO industrial series, but it's engineered specifically for mobile applications — think excavators, wheel loaders, cranes, and other equipment where duty cycles are harsher, ambient conditions swing wider, and packaging space is tighter than in a stationary factory installation.

    The pump is available in a range of displacement sizes, commonly from 110 cc/rev up to 280 cc/rev, giving it enough scalability to cover mid-size implements as well as heavier equipment. Its nominal pressure rating sits around 350 bar (roughly 5,100 psi), with peak pressure capability up to about 420 bar (roughly 6,100 psi) for intermittent load spikes.

    Control Strategies

    The A15VO can be fitted with several control types depending on the application:

    Pressure control (DR) — holds system pressure at a set point by de-stroking the pump as pressure rises

    Power control (DA/LR) — limits input power draw so the prime mover isn't overloaded, regardless of pressure/flow combination

    Load-sensing control (LS) — matches pump output to actual downstream demand, minimizing throttling losses

    Electro-proportional control (EP) — allows an external controller to command swashplate position directly, useful in electro-hydraulic systems with programmable logic

    Common Issues and Failure Modes

    Loss of Pressure or Flow Under Load

    Often traced to worn piston shoes, a scored swashplate surface, or a failing control valve that isn't sending a full stroke signal to the servo piston. Before assuming internal wear, check the control pressure signal first — a lot of "pump failures" turn out to be a stuck or contaminated control spool.

    Excessive Noise or Cavitation

    Usually a suction-side problem: restricted inlet line, degraded hydraulic fluid, or an inlet filter close to bypass. Because the A15VO can self-prime in many configurations, a marginal suction condition can run for a while before it becomes an audible problem. By this point, some cavitation damage to the pistons or barrel may have already started.

    Overheating

    Frequently linked to running near maximum displacement continuously when the system was sized for intermittent peak demand, or to a control device holding the swashplate at too aggressive an angle for the actual duty cycle. Checking case drain flow and temperature is usually the fastest way to catch this issue early, since case drain rise is one of the earliest indicators of internal leakage before external symptoms appear.

    Swashplate Bearing Wear

    Because the swashplate constantly pivots under full system pressure, its trunnion bearings take continuous cyclic load. In equipment with heavy directional-change duty cycles (frequent forward/reverse or rapid implement reversals), these bearings tend to be the wear item that eventually limits pump life, even when the rest of the pump is in good condition.
