The A2F5 is a fixed displacement, bent-axis axial piston hydraulic motor manufactured by Bosch Rexroth (originally developed under the Brueninghaus Hydromatik / Uchida Rexroth lineage). "Fixed displacement" means the swept volume per revolution never changes — unlike a variable motor, there's no swashplate angle to adjust. Case Drain and Priming
Like all axial piston units, the A2F5's case must be filled with hydraulic fluid before startup, and it needs a case drain line back to the tank — running it dry, even briefly, causes bearing damage almost immediately.
Fluid Cleanliness
Piston motors are far less tolerant of particulate contamination than gear motors. Rexroth specifies strict cleanliness classes for the A2F line, and a degraded or bypassed filter is one of the most common root causes of premature A2F5 failure in the field.
Minimum Inlet Pressure
At high shaft speeds, the case and inlet need adequate absolute pressure to avoid cavitation. Running an A2F5 near its top rated speed without meeting the minimum inlet pressure spec will shorten its life dramatically, even if it seems to "run fine" for a while.
Shaft Loading
If the A2F5 is driven through a pinion, sprocket, or belt that imposes radial side load, Rexroth typically requires derating the nominal pressure to protect the shaft bearings — this is a detail that's easy to miss when repurposing a motor for a non-standard mechanical linkage.
