- FAQ
The V30D is an inline swashplate-type variable displacement axial piston pump designed for open-circuit operation in industrial and mobile hydraulics. HAWE builds it in five size families: 045, 075, 095, 140, and 250. The data sheet groups the 095 and 115 together as one housing family (as it does 140 and 160), so the 115 shares its mechanical envelope with the 095 while offering a larger geometric displacement.
How a Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Works
Understanding the principle makes every later decision, from controller choice to troubleshooting, easier.
The swashplate principle
Inside the pump, a rotating cylinder block carries an array of pistons. Their outer ends ride on a tilted plate, the swashplate. As the shaft turns, each piston is pushed in and out of its bore. On the outward stroke, it draws oil from the suction port; on the inward stroke, it pushes oil to the pressure port through a valve plate.
The angle of the swashplate sets the stroke length. A steeper angle means longer strokes and more oil per revolution. A shallow angle means less. At zero angle the pump delivers practically no flow.
Why variable displacement matters
A fixed pump delivers flow whether the machine needs it or not, and the surplus is dumped across a relief valve as heat. A variable pump simply reduces its swashplate angle when demand falls. Pressure is held, flow shrinks to what is needed, and the power wasted as heat drops sharply.
The role of the controller
The controller moves the swashplate. In a pressure-compensated setup, the pump delivers full flow until system pressure reaches the set value, then destrokes to hold that pressure. A load-sensing controller holds a fixed pressure margin above the load, so the pump delivers exactly the flow the valve is metering. Power or torque-limiting controllers cap the input power so the pump does not overload the prime mover.
Applications: Where the V30D-115 Fits
HAWE and distributors point to open-circuit industrial and mobile duty. In practice, the 115 class suits machines that need moderate to high flow at high pressure with fluctuating demand.
Hydraulic presses
A press cycle has a fast approach, a high-force pressing phase, a hold, and a return. A pressure-compensated V30D delivers high flow during the approach, then destrokes to hold tonnage with very little flow. The result is a cooler tank and a smaller cooler.
Power packs and industrial plants
On a central power pack feeding several actuators, a load-sensing controller lets the pump follow the combined demand. Thru-shaft capability allows a second, smaller pump to be added for a low-pressure circuit such as filtration or cooling without needing another motor.
Marine and heavy equipment
Deck machinery, winches and similar equipment benefit from the pump's low-noise design and its ability to run for long periods under varying loads. Distributors also list mining and tunneling equipment among typical uses.
Installation Best Practices
Suction conditions
Axial piston pumps dislike starved inlets. Keep suction lines short, large in diameter, and free of sharp bends, and keep inlet velocity within HAWE's recommended limits. Cavitation noise, a sudden rise in temperature, or foamy oil in the tank are early warning signs.
Case drain and filling
The pump housing must be filled with oil before the first start, and the case drain line must return to the tank below the oil level with minimal back-pressure. Running dry for even a short time can damage the bearings and sliding surfaces.
Alignment and drive
Use a flexible coupling suited to the keyed or splined shaft, and respect the permitted radial and axial loads. Misalignment is a leading cause of premature shaft seal and bearing failures.
Fluid and filtration
Use mineral hydraulic oil in the viscosity range specified by HAWE, and maintain a cleanliness level consistent with the pump's requirements (an ISO 4406 target is given in the documentation). Clean oil is the single cheapest way to extend pump life.
